AK-47 Gang Busted: Eight Arrested With Explosives As Mpumalanga Robbery Plot Crushed

Mpumalanga police dealt a major blow to organised crime on Monday after arresting eight suspects and seizing high-powered weapons, explosives and stolen vehicles during an intelligence-led operation in Vosman, near eMalahleni.

AK-47s and Explosives Seized in Vosman Bust

Police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said the arrests followed information received three days earlier about a planned robbery involving heavily armed suspects.

“The operation stemmed from intelligence-led information gathered by Witbank Crime Intelligence on Friday, 19 December 2025, indicating a potential robbery planned by a group of heavily armed individuals believed to have converged at a certain house on a plot in Vosman,” Mdhluli said.

Multiple specialised units were deployed, including the Pienaar and Witbank Tactical Response Teams, the Tracking Team, the Nkangala District Anti-Hijacking Task Team, the Middelburg Flying Squad and Tracker Connect.

Suspects Tried to Flee as Police Closed In

Police moved in on the suspected hideout on Monday morning. As officers approached the premises, the suspects attempted to escape.

“Upon approaching the premises, the suspects attempted to flee but were quickly cornered by our dedicated officers,” Mdhluli said.

The eight men, aged between 29 and 51, were arrested and now face charges including the illegal possession of explosives, firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen vehicles. Mdhluli confirmed that further charges may be added as investigations continue.

Stolen Vehicles Linked to Crimes Across Provinces

During the operation, police confiscated five AK-47 rifles, explosives and ammunition. Three vehicles believed to be linked to serious crimes in different provinces were also recovered.

Among them was an Audi A4 with Gauteng registration plates, reportedly stolen during a robbery in Sunnyside in November 2025. Police also found a GWM Florid with Mpumalanga plates and a Toyota Fortuner with Eastern Cape registration, which had been reported stolen in Fish Hoek, Western Cape, in June 2025.

“This breakthrough demonstrates our unwavering resolve to confront and dismantle criminal activities in our communities. We call upon the public to partner with us in fostering a safer environment,” Mdhluli said.

He also issued a stern warning to criminals. “We send a clear message to those engaging in criminal endeavours: it is only a matter of time before justice is served,” he said.

Police Leadership Applauds Joint Operation

The arrests coincided with Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale’s visit to Nkangala to assess Safer Festive Season Operations. He was accompanied by senior SAPS officials, including Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, Simemosenkosi Chamane from SAPS Head Office and Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi praised the coordinated multi-agency effort that led to the successful takedown of the suspects.
