Ruyu Chen explained that many college graduates enter the workforce with “textbook knowledge”, the kind of tasks AI can now handle with ease. From coding analysis to customer service chats, machines can replicate these processes with speed and accuracy.
Companies see little incentive to hire new recruits when software can perform the same tasks without onboarding, training, or salaries.
David Kryscynski, a professor at Brigham Young University who reviewed the research, noted that businesses find it far easier to freeze new hiring than to downsize existing teams. That means the brunt of AI disruption is not about layoffs—it is about the door never opening in the first place for young applicants.
Why No Career Is Truly Safe

Skilled trades like electricians and mechanics also depend heavily on adaptability and situational judgement, qualities that machines have yet to master.

The pattern is clear: jobs demanding empathy, creativity, and adaptability are not only surviving but in many cases thriving in this new AI-powered economy.
Building the Skills AI Cannot Mimic
So what does this mean for young people trying to carve out a career in 2025? Experts say the answer lies in doubling down on human-centred skills.
Kryscynski encourages workers to focus on abilities that cannot be easily coded into software—empathy, leadership, communication, and the ability to navigate morally ambiguous situations. These “soft skills” are quickly becoming the hard currency of the modern job market.
Equally important is learning not to outsource all problem-solving to machines. Kryscynski refers to this as doing “cognitive pushups”—embracing difficult, messy challenges that force the brain to think critically and creatively.
