Community Activist Moses Matiso Shot And Killed In Atlantis Church

Moses Matiso, a prominent community activist and chairperson of the South African National Civics Organisation (SANCO) JS Masakala Branch in Witsand, was tragically shot and killed on Monday morning, March 31, 2025, at his church in Atlantis.

His death following  a gun shot, is believed to be an assassination linked to his efforts in fighting crime within his community.

Matiso was 32 years old when he died.

Shooting Incident At Church Under Investigation

Atlantis police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that the police have registered a murder case following the fatal shooting.

According to Twigg, two unknown gunmen entered the church located on the corner of Mnga and Mnama Street in Witsand, Atlantis, and shot at  Matiso before fleeing the scene.

Medical personnel declared the victim dead on the spot.

The motive for the attack and gun shot remains unclear and is part of the ongoing investigation.

SANCO And Community Demand Justice For Matiso’s Death

The SANCO JS Masakala Branch expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of Matiso, describing him as a dedicated leader committed to justice and community development.

In a statement, they linked his assassination to the ongoing battle against local criminal syndicates, many of which Matiso had been actively fighting since 2024.

The branch decried the failure of the justice system to keep arrested criminals behind bars, as many had been granted bail despite being responsible for ongoing terror in the community.

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, condemned Matiso’s killing and called for swift action from the South African Police Service to bring the perpetrators to justice.
