Acting SAPS Deputy Senthumule Slams PKTT Shutdown As ‘Business Unusual’ At Madlanga Inquiry

Acting Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Hilda Senthumule, has described the abrupt disbanding of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) as “business unusual”.

She made the remarks while testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.

Senthumule was tasked with handling the 121 PKTT dockets after they were moved to SAPS headquarters. She told the commission that the disbandment bypassed standard procedures and left her questioning the manner in which the decision was taken.

“It was business unusual where you just have a decision like that to say, ‘disband this structure’,” she said.

Concerns Over Process and Leadership Decisions

Senthumule also commended the head of Crime Intelligence, Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo, for the way he had overseen the PKTT before it was dissolved.

“General Khumalo, actually in my assessment, established a one-stop shop where you get everything under one roof,” she said.

However, her testimony included thinly veiled criticism of suspended Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya. Without naming him directly, she referred to comments he made publicly.

“I won’t mention the general who went on TV and said, ‘the dockets are mine’ and I think that’s why we are where we are today. At national, we don’t own the dockets — the dockets belong to a province.”

Mchunu ‘Ill-Advised’ on PKTT Disbandment

Senthumule further told the commission that suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu had been poorly advised when he approved the disbandment of the task team.

She indicated that had proper guidance been given, the PKTT might not have been dissolved in such a contentious manner.
