Congolese National Accused Of Brutal Assault At Zanzou Nightclub Remains In Custody

A Congolese national accused of brutal torture and assault at Pretoria’s Zanzou nightclub has appeared in court and remains in custody.

The 41-year-old suspect, whose name is being withheld due to an anticipated identity parade, appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where his case was postponed to March 28.

Bail Application Deferred

However, the accused did not proceed with a bail application as initially expected but may do so at a later stage. The court also heard that another victim has come forward and will participate in the identity parade.

Following his first appearance last month, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that the accused faces multiple charges, including eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault with grievous bodily harm.

Horrific Allegations Emerge

According to NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the charges stem from incidents dating back to April 2022 and January 2023.

“It is alleged that in April 2022, the accused assaulted two victims. In a separate incident in January 2023, he allegedly compelled four male victims to perform sexual acts on themselves,” Mahanjana stated.

This assaults came to light after graphic videos surfaced on social media, sparking widespread outrage. The footage showed victims, some of them naked and hogtied, being subjected to brutal beatings. In some clips, their heads were submerged in buckets of water, and they were forced to insert beer bottles into their private parts.

So far, three victims, aged 20, 21, and 22, have officially laid charges against the suspect.

Ongoing Investigations and SAHRC’s Involvement

The accused was arrested on February 20, 2025, following a tip-off received by Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers. Authorities have warned that additional charges may be filed as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has strongly condemned the incidents depicted in the disturbing videos. The commission has launched its own investigation and urged law enforcement agencies to allocate sufficient resources to ensure a thorough probe.

“As part of its investigation, the Commission will engage with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure proper resources are committed to this case. We also call on victims and witnesses to come forward and assist the investigation,” the SAHRC said in a statement.

Additionally, the commission plans to hold discussions with the nightclub’s management regarding its failure to report the crimes to the authorities and to scrutinize the establishment’s role in enabling such acts.

Moreover, the accused is expected to remain behind bars until his next court appearance later this month.
