Couple Accused In Child Pornography Multimillion Assets Seized

A significant breakthrough has been made in the fight against child pornography, with the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) seizing R647,000 and a luxury vehicle linked to accused Darren Wilken and his girlfriend, Tiona Moodley.

The High Court of South Africa granted the AFU an order on February 17, allowing the preservation of cash seized at the crime scene and other cash in a frozen bank account belonging to the couple.

Uncovering A Global Child Pornography Ring

Wilken, 33, was taken into custody on charges of manufacturing and distributing child pornography, possession of drugs, and money laundering.

The investigation, a joint effort between the South African Police Service’s (Saps) Cybercrime Unit and US law enforcement agencies, including the US Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), uncovered a child pornography website allegedly run by Wilken.

The website, hosted from his home in Midrand, is believed to be the largest collection of child pornography ever discovered in South Africa.

Luxury Vehicle And Assets Seized

The seized luxury vehicle, with the registration number KIDZ NA GP, is a notable example of the couple’s lavish lifestyle, funded by their illicit activities.

In addition to the vehicle, high-end electronic equipment and R647,300 in cash were also seized.

Moodley, Wilken’s girlfriend and accomplice, was arrested on suspicion of money laundering and producing and disseminating child pornography stored on a website.

Ongoing Investigation And International Cooperation

The investigation into the matter is ongoing, with a multidisciplinary international team working together to protect the rights of children.

The team includes the FBI, Saps, AFU, Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), and US Secret Service.

The duo appeared in the Randburg Regional Court, where their bail application was successfully opposed by the State on February 14.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to ensure that those responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to justice.
