Aaron Motsoaledi Official Vehicle Involved In N1 Crash That Killed Mother And Baby

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the official vehicle assigned to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi was involved in a deadly accident on the N1 close to Bela-Bela in Limpopo on 9 May.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the state vehicle was being driven by a member attached to the Protection Security Services (PSS) when the incident took place.

SAPS Details Circumstances Around Aaron Motsoaledi Vehicle Crash

According to preliminary findings, a woman was crossing the road with her two children when the collision happened. SAPS said one of the children was a baby strapped to the woman’s back at the time of the incident.

Brig Mathe explained that the family was attempting to get to the opposite side of the road after the woman’s husband had allegedly been knocked down and killed moments earlier by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer.

Police further stated that while trying to cross the highway, the woman and her children were struck by the minister’s official vehicle. The mother and baby later died from their injuries.

Aaron Motsoaledi Security Team Stayed At N1 Crash Scene

SAPS confirmed that the minister, together with his driver and close protection officer, remained at the scene after the accident occurred. This was done in accordance with standard operating procedures followed in incidents of this nature.

Emergency medical personnel and police later arrived at the scene to assist. Statements were subsequently obtained from individuals who were present during the incident.

Police have since registered two separate culpable homicide investigations linked to the incidents on the N1. One case relates to the death of the husband, while the second focuses on the deaths of the mother and baby.

Because both motorists involved are members of SAPS, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken charge of the investigation. SAPS also conveyed its condolences to the grieving family following the tragic events.
