947 Ride Joburg Proves Johannesburg’s Status As A World-Class City, Says Mayor Morero

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has reaffirmed the city’s reputation as a world-class metropolis following the successful hosting of the 947 Ride Joburg on Sunday.

The annual cycling event saw an estimated 30,000 participants take over the streets of Johannesburg, transforming the city into a vibrant showcase of endurance and community spirit.

Cyclists competed in two main categories — the 97-kilometre road race and the 35-kilometre short ride — both offering a scenic yet challenging tour through Johannesburg’s urban landscape.

Speaking on radio station 947, Morero said the metro was working to make Johannesburg more accommodating for cyclists.

“You’d know that in 2015, 2014 we rolled out cycling lanes, even in the townships. Unfortunately, most of them have not been used as we expected them to be used, so we must continue to inculcate the culture of riding,” he said.

The mayor emphasised that the city remains committed to fostering a stronger cycling culture and improving its infrastructure to support this growing sport.

Morero also noted that the successful execution of the 947 Ride Joburg underscored Johannesburg’s ability to manage large-scale events — an encouraging sign as the city prepares to host the prestigious G20 Leaders’ Summit in November.

“Well, for the city, it’s an important event. Firstly, it demonstrates that our city has the capacity to host events of this magnitude, and it demonstrates that we are a world-class city,” Morero stated.

The 947 Ride Joburg continues to serve as both a celebration of cycling and a reflection of Johannesburg’s dynamic character, uniting residents and visitors in a shared spirit of pride and progress.
