Eight Milnerton High School Pupils Suspended For Assault To Appear In Court

Eight Grade 11 pupils from Milnerton High School, who were suspended following an assault, are set to appear in court on Thursday.

A video of the incident circulated widely on social media earlier this week, prompting outrage from parents, pupils, and the broader community.

According to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), Milnerton High School acted in line with regulations after the assault was reported last Friday. However, the school has come under fire from some quarters for allegedly only taking action after the video gained attention online.

WCED Defends School’s Handling of Assault Allegations

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond stated that the school adhered to the required procedures.

“Disciplinary processes are prescribed by law and the school is following due process. The school will now hold a disciplinary hearing and, based on that outcome, determine a sanction or recommend to the head of department of the WCED, expulsion,” Hammond explained.

She also addressed claims that the school acted only after the video went viral, saying, “The school has followed due process. They immediately reported the allegations of abuse to the WCED on Friday, and processes for investigation were immediately initiated.”

Hammond further confirmed that two additional videos related to the incident have since been submitted to the school. These recordings will now form part of the ongoing investigation to ensure a full and fair assessment of the events.
