75 Gauteng Drivers Arrested For Drunk Driving As Safer Festive Season Operation Kicks Off

Gauteng police have arrested 75 motorists for drunk driving as part of the province’s Safer Festive Season operation, which officially began over the weekend.

The large-scale crackdown included roadblocks, liquor outlet inspections, and increased patrols at key transport hubs across Gauteng.

According to police, the operation aims to reduce road fatalities, curb criminal activity, and ensure public safety during the busy holiday period.

Over 1 000 More Suspects Nabbed for Various Crimes

Beyond the drunk driving arrests, more than 1 000 additional suspects were taken into custody for offences ranging from assault and drug dealing to possession of unlicensed firearms and operating illegal liquor outlets.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that all the suspects are expected to appear before various courts on Monday.

Masondo added that targeted operations by detectives resulted in the arrest of individuals wanted for serious crimes.

“The raid by the detectives resulted in the arrests of suspects who have been wanted for committing offences that include rape, sexual assault, murder, attempted murder, robbery, car hijacking and cases related to gender-based violence and femicide,” he said.

The ongoing campaign is part of a province-wide effort to enhance safety and curb lawlessness as the festive season approaches.
