Seven Killed In N4 Head-On Collision Between Machadodorp And Belfast

Seven people were killed in a tragic head-on collision involving two vehicles on the N4 toll road between Machadodorp and Belfast in Mpumalanga during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Emergency services responded to the scene where the victims were declared dead. The crash has once again highlighted the dangers faced by motorists travelling on major routes late at night.

One passenger survived the collision but sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Belfast hospital for urgent medical treatment.

N4 Crash Investigation Points to Speed and Overtaking Risks

Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison Jackie Macie confirmed that the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. However, early indications suggest that dangerous overtaking manoeuvres and excessive speed may have played a role in the fatal collision.

The N4 is a critical transport corridor and has previously been the site of deadly accidents, particularly during off-peak hours when traffic volumes are lower but speeds tend to increase.

Macie reiterated the provincial government’s appeal to motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially when driving at night when visibility is reduced and fatigue sets in more easily.

He also encouraged drivers to stop and rest during long-distance journeys.

“We are again appealing to motorists to be extremely vigilant espe islly at night when visibility is reduced. Roads are shared spaces and drivers must do all in their might to prevent needless loss of life from deadly crashes,” he said.
