69 Suspects Arrested For  Illegal Mining In Limpopo Crack Down Operation

The South African Police Service’s Operation Vala Umgodi has arrested 69 suspects, including illegal miners and undocumented foreign nationals, in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune, Vhembe, Mopani, and Capricorn Districts.

The operation, conducted between April 12 and 13, 2025, targeted illegal mining activities and associated crimes.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 46, were arrested for various offenses, including illegal mining, possession of unlicensed firearms, and contravention of immigration laws.

Seizures Made During Operation

During the operation, police confiscated trucks and shovels used in illegal mining activities.

In the Sekhukhune district, four suspects were arrested for illegal sand mining after failing to produce mining permits.

The suspects were operating in Tlhaveni block D Village, Bevhula, and Maluleke Village in the Saselemani Policing area.

Additionally, 51 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested in the Marble Hall Policing area, while 14 others were arrested across the four districts.

Ongoing Investigations

The suspects are set to  appear before the local Magistrate’s Court, with police investigations ongoing.

Operation Vala Umgodi, is the government body in place to combat crime and illegal mining activities in Limpopo, with significant successes in recent months.

The operation’s focus on intelligence-driven disruptive operations has led to the arrest of numerous suspects and the seizure of illicit goods, including gold-bearing minerals, chrome, and counterfeit goods.
