Over 600 Undocumented Foreign Nationals Arrested In Mayfair

More than 600 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested during a large-scale joint law-enforcement operation in Mayfair, Johannesburg, on Tuesday, 18 November.
According to the City of Johannesburg, the multi-agency raid resulted in the detention of 217 women and 413 men, all foundto be in contravention of the Immigration Act.
Multi-agency Operation targets Undocumented Foreign Nationals
Member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for public safety, Mgcini Tshwaku, said the operation was led by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), working alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Home Affairs.

“All detained individuals are currently being processed by Home Affairs officials in full compliance with relevant legislation,” Tshwaku confirmed.

He said the intelligence-driven intervention formed part of the City’s broader crime-prevention and by-law enforcement initiatives across Johannesburg.
Tshwaku praises coordination and professionalism
Tshwaku welcomed the outcome of the raid and commended the professionalism of all participating agencies.
“This operation is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when law-enforcement agencies work together decisively,” he said.
“We will continue to intensify intelligence-driven interventions to restore safety and order in our communities.”
The MMC confirmed that similar operations are scheduled to continue across the city as authorities increase pressure on criminal networks associated with illegal immigration.
He added that the JMPD Tactical Response Unit and K9 Unit have been assigned to intensify investigations into criminal syndicates suspected of facilitating human trafficking and illegal immigration in the Mayfair area.
