5-Year-Old Dies After ‘Eating Snacks From Spaza Shop’ In Diepkloof

Gauteng police have launched an inquest following the death of a five-year-old boy in Diepkloof after he allegedly consumed snacks from a local spaza shop. The child exhibited symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea before being taken to a local clinic, where he was pronounced dead.

Police and Community Response

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the cause of death is still under investigation, pending autopsy results. Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for immediate action, ordering the closure of all spaza shops implicated in food poisoning incidents.

This incident follows another recent tragedy in Diepkloof, where a child died under similar circumstances. Three other children were hospitalized in critical condition after consuming snacks from a local spaza shop.

Ward Councillor Brenda Dammie condemned the situation, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations and compliance.

Spaza Shops Registration Drive

In response to these incidents, President Ramaphosa has mandated that all tuck shops and food-handling facilities register with their respective municipalities within 21 days.

The registration process aims to ensure compliance with health and safety standards, preventing future outbreaks. Municipalities are providing workshops, training, and resources to support small business owners through this transition.

The community is urged to report any illegal business practices, and municipalities are facilitating a complaints procedure to address these concerns. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on protecting children and ensuring food safety in Diepkloof and beyond. The collaboration between police, government, and the community is crucial in preventing further tragedies and promoting a safer environment for all.
