It is believed the girl had been playing near the pit with two friends before descending the stairs that led inside. Authorities say it remains unclear whether she slipped accidentally or was unable to climb back to safety.
Her friends quickly ran to alert the community, sparking desperate search efforts. Residents drained nearly half of the toxic mixture from the pit but were unable to recover her. It was only after this that RUSA was called for assistance.
