Five Suspects Shot Dead In Police Shootout During KZN Crime Crackdown

Five suspects were shot and killed during a dramatic shootout with police in Chatsworth, south of Durban, on Monday morning. According to police, the confrontation broke out when officers attempted to arrest the group linked to a wave of violent crimes in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident, saying the criminals were part of a gang responsible for terrorising communities across Mpumalanga township, Marianhill, and the uMsunduzi area.

“Our officers were looking for suspects who were terrorising communities of Mpumalanga township, Marrianhill and uMsunduzi area with murders, house robberies and extortion,” Netshiunda explained.

Intelligence-Led Operation Turns Deadly

The operation, carried out in the early hours of the morning, was based on intelligence linking the five of them to serious criminal activity.

“When we arrived here in the early hours of this morning, the suspects opened fire at the police and a shootout [occurred],” Netshiunda said.

Police returned fire, leading to the deaths of all five suspects at the scene. Authorities have confirmed that no officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

The suspects were allegedly behind multiple murders, armed robberies, and extortion schemes that left communities living in fear.

Police have assured residents that they will continue to intensify operations to dismantle criminal networks and restore safety in affected areas.
