Five Suspects Arrested After Armed Robberies At Mpumalanga Church And Tavern

Mpumalanga police arrested five suspects, aged between 19 and 30, on Saturday morning, 6 September 2025. The arrests took place on the N4 Road near the Kanyamazane turn-off, where authorities recovered two firearms, several mobile phones, and other suspected stolen items.

The breakthrough followed two violent robberies earlier in the day, one at a church in Ngwenyeni near Komatipoort around 03:30, and another at a tavern in Madadeni, also near Komatipoort in Nkomazi.

Teen Injured in Church Shooting During Robbery

During the Ngwenyeni church robbery, a 14-year-old boy sustained injuries when suspects opened fire. He was rushed to hospital for treatment. Police confirmed that the suspects targeted congregants before fleeing with valuables.

Later the same day, a tavern in Madadeni was attacked in a similar manner. Authorities linked both incidents to the group of suspects apprehended on the N4.

In a separate incident, a 22-year-old suspect was fatally shot after allegedly robbing worshippers at a mosque in Kwaggafontein on Friday evening, 5 September 2025, around 18:30. During the robbery, three victims were shot and sustained injuries.

Meanwhile, the five arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Kanyamazane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 September 2025. They face charges including possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of suspected stolen property, and other serious offences.
