Four Children Killed In Cape Town As Community Cries Out For Urgent Action

A devastating wave of violence has left Cape Town communities reeling after six children were attacked in a single week — four of them fatally. Fear and anger now grip neighbourhoods demanding urgent intervention.

The GOOD Party has condemned the escalating brutality, describing it as a “moral collapse” and urging authorities to act decisively to protect children across the city.

GOOD Party councillor Jonathan Cupido said the surge in violence, unfolding during the national 16 Days of Activism campaign, stands as “a sickening contradiction” to efforts aimed at safeguarding vulnerable groups.

“In the space of one week, at least six children, aged between four and 16, were victims of brutal violence, including multiple murders and shootings,” Cupido said.

“To have six of our children brutalised in a single week, four of them murdered, at a time when we are meant to be amplifying the call to protect the vulnerable, is a moral collapse.”

Cape Town Child Murders Spark Safety Concerns

The violent incidents include the killing of a nine-year-old boy during an attack on his Mitchells Plain home, where two adults were also murdered; the rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in Khayelitsha — a case in which a 17-year-old suspect has been arrested; the shooting of a 14-year-old girl in Kensington; and the wounding of another teenage girl in Manenberg.

In Retreat and Eerste River, two 15-year-olds were shot and injured in separate attacks.

“These are not just statistics; they are shattered futures, devastated families, and a damning indictment of the failure to safeguard our most precious citizens,” said Cupido.

GOOD Party Calls for Stronger Policing and Social Investment

The party is now pushing for a coordinated response from law enforcement and prosecutors, urging swift arrests and prioritised convictions to ensure offenders are removed from communities.

Cupido called on authorities to “ensure all perpetrators responsible for these heinous crimes are arrested swiftly and without fail,” adding that the National Prosecuting Authority must ensure “those responsible are held behind bars and removed from our communities.”

He also stressed the need for heightened visible policing in violence-prone and gang-affected areas, arguing that proactive strategies are essential to prevent further harm to children.

Beyond policing, Cupido said that the crisis underscores the urgent need for greater investment in social development. The GOOD Party is urging all levels of government to channel more resources into social programmes.

Strengthening these initiatives, he said, is vital to addressing “the root causes of these actions” and improving the socio-economic challenges that perpetuate cycles of violence.

“Our children deserve to grow up safe, free from the daily terror of gun violence and predatory attacks,” Cupido said.

“If the 16 Days of Activism is to mean anything, it must translate into 365 days of action and accountability for those who harm women and children.”
