33 Undocumented Children Intercepted At Beitbridge Border, Placed Under Social Development Care

Thirty-three undocumented children intercepted at the Beitbridge Border Post have been placed under the care of South Africa’s Department of Social Development.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) confirmed that the minors, aged between four and 15, were discovered on Tuesday in a vehicle travelling from South Africa to Zimbabwe.

According to the authority, two foreign nationals were arrested at the border for allegedly facilitating the unlawful transportation of the children.

Beitbridge Border Interception Highlights Child Protection Concerns

BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi said the swift intervention ensured the children were removed from potential harm and transferred to the appropriate authorities.

“All 33 minor children were immediately handed over to the department of social development for further processing, in line with child protection protocols and South Africa’s domestic and international obligations to safeguard vulnerable persons.”

The arrest of the two suspects forms part of ongoing efforts by border officials to curb illegal cross-border movement, particularly where minors are involved.

Officials have reiterated that safeguarding children remains a top priority, with law enforcement and social services working jointly to ensure their welfare while investigations continue.
