3-Year-Old Limpopo Girl Dies After Being Left Locked In Car For Hours

Police in Limpopo have opened a case of culpable homicide following the tragic death of a 3-year-old girl who was found locked inside a vehicle parked at Seshego Hospital on Monday afternoon.

According to police reports, the child was discovered inside a blue Toyota Corolla Cross that had been parked within the hospital premises. It is believed the toddler had been trapped inside the vehicle for several hours before being found.

Child discovered unresponsive inside car

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said officers were called to the scene shortly after 3:10 pm following reports of a possible culpable homicide.

“Upon arrival, the members found a medical practitioner who pointed out a blue Toyota Corolla Cross motor vehicle parked inside the hospital yard,” said Ledwaba.

“Police were informed about a three-year-old baby girl who was allegedly found locked inside the vehicle with the windows closed while seated on the back seat.”

Medical staff pronounced the child dead at the scene. Preliminary findings suggest she succumbed to extreme heat and lack of oxygen after being left inside the vehicle for several hours.

Mother allegedly ‘forgot’ 3-year-old in car

Early investigations indicate that the child was allegedly left inside the car by her mother, who works at the hospital.

“Information gathered so far indicates that at about 7:00 am, the deceased was left by her mother inside the motor vehicle when she rushed for a handover session at the medical facility and seemingly forgot about her in the car,” Ledwaba said.

Police investigating possible negligence. A case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Seshego Police Station as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
