3-Month-Old Baby Shot Dead In Cape Town As Mass Shootings Surge

Cape Town’s wave of violent shootings has claimed yet another innocent life — a three-month-old baby was shot dead while in his mother’s arms on Friday morning, 22 August 2025.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed that two unidentified armed men stormed a home in Yellowwood Street, Bonteheuwel, shortly before 8 am. The suspects entered the living room, where one of them opened fire, fatally wounding the infant and attempting to kill the child’s mother.
“The child was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The unidentified suspects fled the scene and they are yet to be arrested. The motive for this attack is believed to be gang-related. The victim was declared deceased by the medical personnel,” Swartbooi said.

Bishop Lavis detectives are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder and are pursuing leads to track down the gunmen. Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app anonymously.
Another Shooting Before Baby Killed
Just a day earlier, Cape Town was rocked by another violent incident when two people were killed and five others, aged between 22 and 43, were injured in a mass shooting in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk said detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit and the Taxi Violence Team responded to the scene on OR Tambo Road at about 8.15 pm. Several suspects have since been arrested in connection with the incident.
Surge in Cape Town Murders
According to police reports, Cape Town has recorded more than 30 murders in the past two months linked to mass shootings. Authorities believe many of these killings are tied to gang violence, taxi disputes, or extortion rackets.
The Western Cape police have intensified operations in affected communities, but residents remain gripped by fear as violent attacks continue to claim lives indiscriminately — including those of the most vulnerable.
