28-Year-Old Arrested For Statutory Rape After 13-Year-Old Gives Birth On Christmas Day

A 28-year-old man has been arrested and faces a charge of statutory rape after a 13-year-old girl gave birth at Seshego Hospital on Christmas Day, the office of Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba has confirmed.

The incident has sparked widespread concern, highlighting ongoing issues surrounding teenage pregnancies in South Africa.

Police Act Swiftly Following Hospital Concerns

Premier Ramathuba praised law enforcement for their prompt action in apprehending the suspect, who is currently in custody and expected to appear in court soon.

“We must remain vigilant and committed to preventing such heinous acts in our communities,” said Ramathuba.

The arrest came after hospital staff reported the alarming situation to authorities.

Teenage Pregnancy: A National Crisis

This case adds to the troubling statistics on teenage pregnancies in South Africa. Over 122,000 teenagers gave birth during the past financial year, with 2,716 being girls aged between 10 and 14 and 119,587 aged 15 to 19.

KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane also addressed the issue of teenage pregnancy during her province’s Christmas briefing, calling it “unacceptable.”

“This is something we need to start fighting against as a society,” she said. “Girls falling pregnant at a young age reflects a broader societal challenge that cannot be ignored.”

Simelane emphasised the importance of collective responsibility, urging both men and women to work together to address the issue.

“Men need to stand up and say ‘not in our name,’” she said.

Progress and Interventions

While the scale of the problem remains significant, the Department of Health has noted a decline in the number of teenagers giving birth on Christmas Day in recent years.

This progress is attributed to targeted interventions, such as the rollout of youth-friendly zones in primary healthcare facilities and sexual reproductive health campaigns. These initiatives aim to create a safe environment for young people to access sexual and reproductive health services without stigma or delays.

Call for Justice

Premier Ramathuba called for the judiciary to act decisively in cases of statutory rape, describing it as a pervasive issue in many parts of Limpopo.

“We welcome the quick response by police after the hospital raised concern about a 13-year-old giving birth. It is our responsibility to make sure the judiciary acts in accordance with the extent of the crime. Statutory rape is visible in many parts of our province, and we need to bring to a close such a sad chapter,” said Ramathuba.
