In a robust effort aimed at stabilizing and reducing crime in the Northern Cape during the Easter period, local law enforcement  led to the arrest of 275 individuals across five districts.

The operation, which included the implementation of Operation Shanela and Operation Paseka, focused on key hotspot areas.

These operations targeted various criminal activities, including illegal liquor trade, burglaries, drug dealing, and possession of firearms.

The operations effort resulted in the seizure of counterfeit goods, drugs, dangerous weapons, and even a stolen vehicle from Franschhoek, Western Cape.

2,911 Vehicles And 5,755 Individuals Searched During The Process

Over 13,088 actions were conducted across the province, including vehicle and foot patrols, as well as extensive stop-and-search operations.

2,911 vehicles and 5,755 people were stopped and searched at various vehicle check points (VCP’s) and roadblocks.

The targeted approach also focused on unlicensed outlets, ensuring compliance with regulations in the alcohol and second-hand goods sectors.

During this time, officers inspected numerous businesses, farms, scrapyards, and liquor outlets for non-compliance, enforcing the law to ensure that offenders face appropriate consequences.

Community Policing And Government Agencies Boosts Crime Prevention Efforts

The success of these operations has been attributed to the collaboration between community policing structures, and other government departments.

The operations were further strengthened by tracing efforts to apprehend suspects with outstanding warrants or those who failed to attend court hearings.

Various community outreach programs and engagements took place throughout the five districts, helping strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the public.

Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, acknowledged the role of community structures and thanked the public for their continued commitment to the fight against crime.
