22 Years In Prison For Zimbabwean Teen Found With Body Parts Of Missing Girl

The Polokwane High Court in Limpopo has recently delivered a significant verdict in the heinous murder case of 17-year-old Motjatji Thoka. Brian Mugwira, a 19-year-old Zimbabwean national, was sentenced to 22 years of imprisonment for his role in dismembering the girl’s body.

The Disappearance of Motjatji Thoka

Motjatji Thoka, who resided in Mokomene village, was reported missing from her home on January 5, 2024. Following her disappearance, the local police swiftly launched a missing person investigation, which was escalated to the provincial missing person task team.

The dedicated efforts of the yellow-clad officers traced the grim specifics of this case, culminating in the discovery of Motjatji’s remains on January 8, 2024, in a residence’s yard, with several body parts tragically absent.

The Arrest and Prosecution of the Suspects

Following extensive investigations led by the Provincial Police, Mugwira and his co-accused, Tatenda Sithole, were identified and arrested for their involvement. Notably, Mugwira was apprehended in the mountains near Ndzelele village with some of the victim’s body parts in his possession.

During the court proceedings, Mugwira pleaded guilty to the charges, resulting in his sentencing, while Sithole, who pleaded not guilty, awaits trial scheduled for June 2, 2025. Lieutenant General Themba Hadebe of the Limpopo police has praised the investigative team for their vital role in securing the delivery of justice, which is imperative for the memory of the victim.
