21 Year Old Zimbabwean Arrested with Explosives in Klerksdorp

A 21-year-old Zimbabwean national was arrested in Klerksdorp during an intelligence-led operation targeting the illegal sale of explosives.

The suspect, who attempted to flee when he became aware of the police presence, was apprehended by members of the National Intervention Unit (NIU).

This was after a brief chase near a local shopping mall.

Explosives Discovered

The police search of his vehicle uncovered a variety of explosives, including capped fuses, 30 blasting cartridges, and 50 meters of detonating cord.

Initial investigations suggest that the explosives were intended for use in cash-in-transit heists, ATM bombings, and illegal mining activities.

Arrested Suspect To Appear In Court For Unlawful Possession Of Explosives

The suspect is set to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 10 March 2025, facing charges of unlawful possession of explosives.

The police have made it clear that such operations will continue in their efforts to disrupt the criminal activities that fuel illegal mining and related crimes.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, commended the officers involved in the operation for their swift and decisive action.
