SurgeZirc reports that a driver has been confirmed dead following the car accident that claimed the life of the newly elected Mayor of Johannesburg, Jolidee Matongo.
Recall that Matongo was killed in a car accident as he returned from campaigning with South Africa’s president on Saturday, just over a month after being elected Mayor.
SurgeZirc understands that the other driver who was also involved in the car accident died as a result of the various degrees of injuries.
It was gathered that other casualties recorded included a pedestrian who was killed in the crash as well as Matongo’s two VIP protection members who were also reported to be injured during the crash.
Matongo who recently took over from Geoff Makhubo who passed away in July from COVID-19 had served as mayor for just more than a month before his painful demise in a car accident on Saturday night.
Matongo was born in Soweto, according to the City of Johannesburg’s website, and became a member of the ANC Youth League after taking up student politics at the age of 13.
