Since Monday afternoon, most of KwaZulu-Natal has been bombarded with rain. The heavy rains have resulted in a house on Twilight Avenue in La Mercy, on KwaZulu-north Natal’s coast, being severely damaged. On Tuesday morning the footage of the wrecked property made rounds on social media.
According to reports, the house partially fell after a stormwater pipe failed as a result of heavy rain. It also caused half of the road to be washed away.
The owners of the house, who were completely distraught, were still inside when rescuers came. They said they’ve been living in their home for the past 20 years.
Explaining further they said they were in the house on Monday night with their two children when the incident happened. The family of four said when it went down all they could do was watch. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the eThekwini municipality is trying to restore the water supply and calm the region.
The family had alleged that this collapse took place due to negligence from the municipality, adding that municipal workers had just replaced their drainage system last week Thursday.
