Ngizwe Mchunu, a staunch supporter of former President Jacob Zuma, has been granted bail by the Randburg Magistrates Court. Mchunu was detained last week and held in detention until his bail hearing on Wednesday and Thursday.
He is one of several accused to appear in court in Gauteng in connection with the violent disturbances that erupted in the province and in KwaZulu-Natal following Zuma’s arrest on July 7.
In her decision on Thursday, Magistrate Gayle Pretorius stated that keeping the accused in jail was not in the best interests of justice. Bail has been set at R2,000, subject to certain conditions.
The accused is not permitted to leave Durban except to attend his court in Johannesburg, and he is not permitted to convene or address any public gatherings, nor may he broadcast propaganda for war or inciting impending violence on his social media platforms.
