In the aftermath of extensive looting and property destruction, the South African National Defence Force has acknowledged that soldiers have been deployed in KwaZulu-Natal. “I can confirm that members of the SANDF have been deployed,“ General Mafi Mgobozi said.
According to him, the SANDF has begun pre-deployment processes and procedures in response to a request for assistance from the National Joint Operational and to assist law enforcement agencies deployed in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces to quell the unrest that has gripped both provinces in recent days. ” The deployment will commence as soon as all deployment processes are in place,“ he said.

The duration and amount of deployed soldiers will be determined by the relevant law enforcement agencies’ assessment of the situation on the ground.
Mgobozi further stated that the SANDF’s deployment goal is to provide safety and a secure working environment for members of the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies as they carry out their constitutionally mandated law and order tasks.
Hundreds of businesses and shops in KZN and Gauteng were plundered over the weekend. Videos of people breaking into shopping malls and stealing clothing, food, and other stuff continue to spread on social media.
