The Justice Department began the day by promising Jacob Zuma that during his time at Estcourt Prison, he would be treated with the utmost dignity and respect. They had to apologize before the end of the day when images of the former president were stolen from a memory card and put to the internet.

It’s been another hectic day for law enforcement officers, and it appeared that a period of relative peace was on the horizon after the media circus that had erupted in Nkandla made its way to Escourt. The leaked photos, on the other hand, have turned into a legal nightmare for Ronald Lamola and his ministry, which is now advising residents not to spread the images.

“A criminal case has been opened after a camera SD card, containing images of the Former President, Jacob Zuma, being admitted at a correctional centre was stolen. Images were stolen from a camera of the official who had been assigned to take photos for institutional filing purposes.”

“We’re appalled by the distribution of these images on social media and we urge people to refrain from sharing them. DCS condemns in strongest possible terms such action and will leave no stone unturned in bringing to book those behind it.”

The story doesn’t end there, though, because this is South Africa. According to a statement released by Justice Ministry spokesperson Chrispin Phiri, the photographs were distributed by a “recognized broadcaster.” The SD Card appears to have been sneaked out of the facility in the early phases of the investigation.
