Former President Jacob Zuma has handed himself in to begin his 15-month imprisonment in the final hour of the deadline. He will spend the night at an undisclosed correctional services facility in KwaZulu-Natal.

At 11:47 p.m., the Jacob Zuma Foundation confirmed the news, stating that a detailed statement would be released soon. On Wednesday night, at 11:15 p.m., a motorcade was seen departing his home.

“Dear South Africans and the World. Please be advised that President Zuma has decided to comply with the incarceration order. He is on his way to hand himself into a Correctional Services Facility in KZN. A full statement will be issued in due course,” the tweet read.

Zuma was supposed to hand himself over to police on Sunday, June 4th; if he didn’t, police had three days to arrest him, with the final deadline falling on Wednesday at midnight.

On June 29, he was found guilty of being in contempt of a judgement that required him to appear and participate in the state capture commission, and he was sentenced to 15 months in prison by the Constitutional Court.
