Just how racist is South Africa? Floyd Shivambu chose to put the cat amongst the pigeons during a speech in Gqeberha on Wednesday – but don’t get him started on felines any time soon. The EFF Deputy Leader has slammed the white pet owners of South Africa, claiming that they spend more on their animals than they do on their domestic workers.
The claim follows a series of bold statements made by Julius Malema on Tuesday. During a Freedom Day rally, the combative leader of the Red Berets asked white people ‘for a direct apology’ towards black citizens – and even had a go at the gogos and grandfathers in South Africa for showing blind loyalty to the ANC.
Shivambu, however, fancied a bit of one-upmanship. His lecture to a student collective hammered home the EFF’s stance on Freedom Day, insisting that black people had nothing to celebrate ‘while they remain landless’. He also made it clear that the party wants to ‘overthrow the government’ – and the outrageous statements didn’t end there, either.
Malema’s right-hand man put it out there: He argued that South Africa is ‘the most racist nation on Earth’, due to its racial wealth divides and the ‘unresolved traumas’ from 1994. Quite simply, you’ll never catch Mr. Shivambu mincing his words:
“South Africa continues to be the most racist nation in the world. White people spend more money on their cats and dogs than they do on their domestic workers. That is what we still experiencing today in this so-called freedom. White people continue to own our land. They own everything. What is this freedom without the land?”
“We must decolonize the entirety of the African continent. Colonialism taught us to hate ourselves. If you hate any of your African brothers then you hate yourself. And that is what we need to fight and change. Such a system to remain with us forever, and we should refuse that… we want to overthrow this government and it is not a secret”
SHIVAMBU: Now, when apartheid realized that it was no longer profitable for big business (Anglo, Ruperts, etc.) when they realized that there was now consciousness around the world – they said that maybe we must substitute a white government with a black government.
