A Durban shopper was injured in a shootout at the Pavilion Shopping Centre in Westville as armed robbers fled the scene of a jewellery shop robbery on Wednesday evening.
A video of the shootout, filmed from a nearby store inside the shopping centre has been shared on social media groups. The video shows several suspects fleeing the scene, dragging a large bag, as gunfire rings out inside the shopping centre.
KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that a jewellery store employee had alleged that she was busy performing her duties together with a colleague in the shop when three armed suspects. The incident occurred at around 5.40pm on Wednesday. One of the suspects allegedly used a hammer to smash the glass door of the jewellery store to gain entry into the premises.
She said the suspects held the women up at gunpoint inside the jewellery shop. “The suspects assaulted them demanded the safe keys and took a bag with various jewellery. The security guards who were performing their duties noticed what was happening and confronted the suspects. A shootout ensued between the guards and the suspects,” Mbele said.
“A civilian was shot in the cross fire. He sustained a gunshot wound to his right knee and was taken hospital for medical attention,” Mbele said.
“One employee sustained assault wounds on the body and face. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of jewellery,” Mbele said.
Mbele said the security guard did not sustain any injuries during the shooting. “Charges of robbery, assault GBH and attempted murder were opened at Westville police station for investigation,” Mbele said.
