Scenes of chaos were witnessed in Cape Town on Wednesday after a planned protest got out of hand. The march to the National Assembly, which formed part of a ‘national strike’ taking place today, turned sour when cops clashed with protestors – some of whom allegedly tried to enter Parliament.

The rowdy crowds were resisted by SAPS, as riot shields and police cordons were used to wrestle control from the agitated citizens. As the argy-bargy continued, tear gas and rubber bullets were deployed.

Attempts to force a way into Parliament have so far been unsuccessful, and the police were able to disperse the more ‘troublesome’ elements within the crowd. However, the clash has set an embittered tone for the upcoming Budget speech.
