Political analyst Sanusha Naidu says South Africans must come to terms with avoiding funerals during the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this week, President Cyril Ramaphosa said funerals had continued to be among the major super-spreader events of the coronavirus. He cautioned South Africans against exceeding the allowed number of mourners at funerals.

According to current Alert Level three lockdown restrictions, no more than 50 people are allowed to attend a funeral service. Naidu says families should also discourage friends and relatives from attending funerals of their loved ones.

“The family needs to basically take a strict approach and say nobody is allowed to come to the funeral. I think that’s a big step. You will have one or two people that will come but you just have to be strict in the measures and say you can’t come. You can call me, I’ll speak to you, but you’re just not allowed to come,” adds Naidu.
