Zinhle Sekgoapa a Mpumalanga 14-year-old girl’s lifeless body was found in a pit toilet near her home on Saturday. The teen girl was believed to have been kidnapped as suspects called her family to pay R86 000 for her to be released.
The family then opened a case of kidnapping on Thursday.
Zinhle was part of the LGBQI community, and she was a teen girl who was open about her sexuality.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, the teen girl’s family last saw her on Wednesday. The following day, her family received threatening cellphone messages and a demand for ransom in exchange for her release.
On Saturday, a family member discovered the teen girl lifeless body inside a pit toilet at her near her home. Police were notified and a murder case was opened.
Zinhle’s brother Sakhile Nkosi said “we don’t know if they did this because of her sexuality.
“He doesn’t understand why his sister was taken. We’re traumatized and ask for a thorough investigation,“ Sakhile added.
The police made a breakthrough on Monday by arresting the suspect who is a 19-year-old man alleged to be in connection with the murder, and is due to appear in the Kabokweni Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
