The African National Congress (ANC) Western Cape former secretary, Songezo Mjongile, affectionately known as “Madiba”, has died after a battle with cancer. Mjongile passed away yesterday, 17 September, in Johannesburg.
Mjongile announced in April that he had been diagnosed with colon cancer. His death has come as a shock to most of his friends and fellow politicians.
The ANC released a statement stating that the party is saddened by Mjongile’s passing.
“Around the 29th August 2020, the ANC learnt that Cde Songezo had been diagnosed with colon cancer in April 2020 and amongst his last wishes was “to contribute to the renewal of the ANC and the success of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR),” the statement said.
Mjongile was a former leader of the Western Cape chapter of the Congress of South Africa Students, a former head of the party’s Youth League’s investment company Lembede Investment Holdings and served on the executive and national working committees of the league.
He also became the provincial treasurer and later the provincial secretary of the party in the Western Cape.
The ANC believes that Mjongile showed commitment to the party, the Mass Movement (MDM) structures and to the society of South Africa.
