Suspects Saved, Handcuffed After Jumping off 33m Cliff into Umlazi River

Reports stated that two men who supposedly mugged people in the area were chased after by the community towards the Umlazi River direction.

Two suspected robbers were saved and handcuffed after they jumped off a 33m cliff into the Umlazi river after being pursued by community members in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday.

Members of the Saps, metro police, and Durban K9 search and rescue units, as well as Life Response 247 paramedics, rushed to the scene in Welbedacht West on Wednesday morning.

Reports stated that two men who supposedly mugged people in the area were chased after by the community towards the Umlazi River direction.

Saps said in a statement that both suspects attempted to escape by jumping off a 33m cliff. One of the men fell on a rock next to the river and died on the bang.

The second suspect fell inside the river. He was able to cross the river and pull himself out of the water before passing out.

Police medics and EMS treated the suspect before pulling him up the rocky embankment.

He was taken to hospital in a grave state under a police guard.
