Juan Mata’s powerful second-half strike has moved Manchester United into the FA Cup fourth round as they defeated Wolves 1-0. The Spanish midfielder chipped over Wolves goalkeeper John Ruddy to settle the third-round replay after being put through on goal by Anthony Martial.
Wolves had an early Pedro Neto strike ruled out by the video assistant referee for a handball in the build-up of the goal. We could say the win for Manchester United was a well-deserved one after the made a narrow escape to net one in a very tight match at Old Trafford.
Manchester United will next head to either Watford or Tranmere, who had initially had their third-round replay postponed at Prenton Park on Tuesday because of heavy rain pour.
Manchester United did not manage a shot on target in the levelled first game between the two sides at Molineux on 4 January but was much more frightened this time.
The Wolves goalkeeper, Ruddy pulled an excellent save that prevented Mata from scoring an opener in the first half, not to mention Daniel James who would have also scored too.
The match which started with quite a high-tempo later settled down and later saw Mata, 31, striking in the winner to move the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to the next level of the FA Cup.
