Police have arrested a teacher from the whites-only town Orania in the Northern Cape for purportedly engaging in sexual relations with a minor.
Police representative Captain Olebogeng Tawana affirmed that the educator had been captured and was accused of statutory assault.
Chairperson of the leading board of the Volkskool Orania, Carel Boshoff, said the head of the school initially alerted of the claims on September 16 when individuals from the police child protection unit visited the school to investigate a complaint of child molestation.
Boshoff said at the hour of the examination, the educator had been away for about fourteen days to complete practical studies in Johannesburg.
As indicated by Boshoff, the police had revealed little data about the episode.
“It appeared that other premises were also visited and that the investigation had no relation to the operation of the school or its activities during school hours or organised after-school activities.”
Boshoff said the official board of trustees had a meeting and informed the teacher through WhatsApp that he needed to contact the head on his arrival.
A decision was made that the teacher was not permitted to enter the school premises or make contact with learners.
He said the teacher had a meeting with the head on the night of September 21 and he was arrested on September 23.
The educator appeared in the Hopetown Magistrate’s Court on September 24 and was released on R5,000 bail.
The educator was given a letter and had not come back to Orania since.
“The letter confirmed that you are legally not guilty of an offense before being convicted, but that the school had to cut all ties,” he said.
“We would like to emphasise that Orania’s community institutions and Volkskool in particular responded to the matter as quickly as possible and are giving all possible assistance to the investigation.”
