Tributes have poured in from social media at the news of the untimely passing of Mandla Maseko who would have been the first black African to travel to space. Popularly known as Afronaut and Spaceboy, Maseko was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle on Saturday.
Since the announcement of his death by a family spokesperson at the weekend, social media has been filled with tributes for Maseko.
In 2016 he was honored by the Gauteng Education Department and had the science building at the Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation named after him.
“Maseko will be solely missed. May Mandla Maseko’s kind and beautiful soul rest In eternal peace,” the family statement said.
Details of his memorial service and funeral would be announced during the course of this week.
My goodness this just came as a shock. I once interviewed him on my @metrofmsa radio show. What a sad tragic loss to a great 🇿🇦n. Condolences to the family and loved ones.
