He Jiankui, Scientist Who Created Genetic Edited Babies, Arrested

He Jiankui, a scientist who have created the first genetically edited babies has been halted by Chinese government. For weeks, no one could state clearly the way about of the scientist, but right now New York Times has discovered that He Jiankui has been in house detention in the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen.

So far the scientist has been restricted from seeing people or having people visit him or his office where the research was carried out. He has only been allow access to sending text messages and emails.

Currently guards are on the watch over his de facto residence and the research premises.

The university where he works has publicly denied reports of the detainment, but staff and his business partner Liu Chaoyu confirmed his presence.

It is not clear yet what the Chinese government intend doing to He Jiankui as there are lots of concerns regarding the honesty of the genetic editing experiment and it authenticity.

The scientific community has accused He Jiankui of giving patients a deceptive consent form ‘they were told it was an AIDS vaccine trial, not genetic modification’.

He Jiankui promised to produce raw data for reviews and backup to his claim, but that never came to pass. At the moment, there’s no way to confirm the procedure or its long-term effectiveness.

The objection from the community of scientist shows that if Chinese government had not taken He Jiankui to house arrest, there would still have been practical issues from his colleagues.
