20-Year-Old Woman Burns Down Family Home After Weekend Of Frustration

A 20-year-old woman from Hazelmere, KwaZulu-Natal, set her family home on fire on Monday morning, reportedly out of frustration after being left alone over the weekend.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) members responded to the scene around 10:17 a.m., finding the property engulfed in flames.

By the time firefighters from Ethekwini Fire and Rescue arrived, the blaze had already caused the roof to collapse and damaged nearby electricity cables before being brought under control.

Desperate Act Leads to Destruction

Neighbours told officers that the young woman appeared distressed after being left behind when her mother and uncle travelled to their rural homestead on Friday. According to reports, she claimed the house had been locked, leaving her with nowhere to sleep.

In a moment of frustration, she said she burned her clothes using a candle. However, the flames spread rapidly, setting the house ablaze. It remains unclear how she gained entry into the locked property.

The woman told authorities she did not intend to destroy the house and only wanted to burn her belongings. Despite the severe damage, no injuries were reported.

Her emotional family members arrived soon after the incident and chose not to open a criminal case of arson.
