20 Pupils Injured As Classroom Ceiling Falls In Giyani

A classroom ceiling at Dingamanzi Primary School in Giyani collapsed on Friday, injuring 20 grade 3 pupils. The incident occurred shortly after the children returned from break.

Classroom Horror

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when grade 3 pupils returned from break. Staff member Victor Mabunda said a loud crash was heard as the ceiling came down on the children.

Pupils Rushed to Hospital

Out of 48 pupils in the classroom, 20 sustained injuries. They were first taken to a local clinic before some were transferred to hospital for further checks. Fortunately, none were critically injured, and all have since been discharged.

Fearing for their children’s safety, parents have pulled their children out of the school and are demanding mobile classrooms. They claim the affected block had previously been declared unsafe by the employment and labour department.

Department Denies Claims

Limpopo education spokesperson Mike Maringa rejected the parents’ assertions, insisting the block was newly renovated less than six months ago. He said learners were only moved there temporarily while construction was under way elsewhere at the school.

Maringa confirmed that departmental officials, contractors, and the school governing body are investigating what caused the collapse.
