2 Women Arrested In Manenberg For Illegal Gambling Operation

In a recent operation, Cape Town police have arrested two women in the Manenberg area for operating illegal gambling machines.

The arrests was carried out during an intelligence-driven raid conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in collaboration with the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board.

The operation targeted unlicensed gambling activities, which have been a growing concern in local communities.

Unlicensed Gambling Machines Seized From Residential Homes

The two women, aged 43 and 46, were apprehended on Tuesday morning after police discovered gambling machines installed in their homes.

Despite not owning the machines, the women were found to be using them without the necessary legal licenses.

Authorities emphasize that possession and operation of unlicensed gambling machines is a criminal offence under South African law.

Risks Of Illegal Gambling And Consequences For Homeowners

Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana noted the dangers of unregulated gambling, particularly for children, who may experience psychological distress and develop gambling problems in the future.

Illegal gambling also contributes to tax evasion, as operators evade paying taxes owed to the government.

Manyana warned that residents allowing such activities in their homes risk eviction, especially if their properties are part of the City of Cape Town’s rental stock.

The properties could also be forfeited to the state for facilitating criminal activity.

The arrested women are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court to face charges.
