Two Teens Arrested In Macassar For Possession Of Imitation Firearms And Live Ammunition

Cape Town’s newly deployed Neighbourhood Safety Officers (NSOs) are proving their worth once again after taking imitation firearms and live ammunition off the streets in Macassar.

On Monday, the team responded to an incident at a local school where a learner was reportedly found in possession of a toy gun. The discovery quickly escalated into a more serious investigation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS).

After further enquiries, officers were led to a nearby residence where they uncovered another imitation firearm and 30 rounds of live ammunition. A 17-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested at the scene.

Police Find Modified Firearms During Follow-Up Operation

Working alongside Metro Police, the NSOs continued their search, which led to the discovery of a second imitation firearm. This resulted in the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect.

Metro Police spokesperson Ruth Solomons confirmed that the seized weapons appeared to have been altered to discharge live rounds.

“Initial indications are that both imitation firearms have been modified to discharge live rounds. The suspects were detained at Macassar SAPS,” said Solomons.

The successful intervention shows the impact of Cape Town’s Neighbourhood Safety Officer initiative, which aims to strengthen community policing and improve safety around schools and residential areas.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to keeping imitation and illegal firearms out of circulation to prevent potential harm in local communities.
