Two Suspects Arrested After Violent Robbery And Stabbing In Verulam, KZN

A 25-year-old woman was attacked and robbed in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday afternoon. At around 15:00, two men confronted her on Moss Street, near Verulam Secondary School.

The suspects forcibly took her handbag, which contained two cellphones, wireless earphones, R50 in cash, and her bank cards.

During the struggle, one of the men stabbed her with the jagged end of a broken beer bottle. The victim’s colleague, who witnessed the attack, confirmed the brutal assault, SurgeZirc SA learned.

Victim Spots Suspects and Alerts Reaction Officers

The next morning, while walking to work, the victim and her colleague spotted the same suspects on Moss Street in the Verulam CBD. One of the suspects was still wearing a mustard T-shirt from the previous day, making him easy to identify.

The victim immediately alerted a Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officer who was patrolling in the area. The officer called for backup and monitored the suspects until reinforcements arrived.

When more Reaction Officers reached the scene, the suspects attempted to flee, sparking a foot chase. Both men were quickly apprehended.

During questioning, officers discovered that both suspects were affiliated with a local gang. The family of the older suspect confirmed his long criminal history, adding that residents of Hazelmere, KZN, had previously exiled him after repeated arrests for serious crimes.

Both men are now in custody at SAPS Verulam, where they face charges related to the robbery and stabbing.
