Two Survive After Light Aircraft Crashes Into Ekurhuleni School Tuck Shop

Two people walked away unharmed after a light aircraft ploughed into a school building in Alberton, within the City of Ekurhuleni, on Sunday afternoon.

According to Ekurhuleni emergency services, the aircraft — carrying an instructor and a student — experienced engine failure while conducting an evaluation flight test, forcing the pair to attempt an emergency landing.

Emergency spokesperson Tikki Macdonald said the pilot had been targeting the school’s rugby field for the landing but ended up crashing into the tuck shop instead.

“Fortunately, both the instructor and student escaped uninjured. The incident has been reported to the Civil Aviation Authorities and is currently under investigation. For life-threatening emergencies in Ekurhuleni, please contact the City of Ekurhuleni’s Life-Threatening Center,” Macdonald confirmed.

Civil Aviation Authorities Launch Investigation Into Aircraft Crash

The crash drew a quick response from emergency personnel, who secured the area and ensured that no students or staff members were in danger at the time of the incident. The Civil Aviation Authorities have since begun an investigation to determine what caused the engine failure.

The City of Ekurhuleni commended the swift actions of the emergency teams, crediting them with preventing a potential tragedy.
