2 Sentenced For Illegal Mining, Immigration Violations In Limpopo

Two men, Ivan Mhuru (31) and Mahleka Mashura (49), have been sentenced by the Sekhukhune Regional Court in Limpopo for engaging in illegal mining activities and violating the Immigration Act.

The court proceedings followed an operation in May 2024 that led to their arrest at the Machakaneng section, in the Atok area.

The arrest was carried out, during a police crackdown on illegal mining in the area.

Details Of Arrest

According to provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, the two suspects were discovered mining illegally with a jackhammer and generator during a tactical police operation.

Upon further inspection, both men were found to be without valid passports, prompting charges of illegal immigration alongside their involvement in illegal mining activities.

Court Sentences

Mashura and Mhuru were each sentenced to four months in prison or a R2,000 fine for illegal mining, and two months in prison or a R1,000 fine for illegal immigration.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo Police, commended the efforts of the investigating officers and arresting team, members of the Vala Umgodi operations, for their successful intervention in tackling illegal mining in the region.
