2 Police Officers And Taxi Driver Arrested For Drunk Driving In KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal’s weekend road safety operations led to the arrest of 27 motorists for drunk driving, including two police officers and a taxi driver transporting 24 passengers.

The arrests form part of the intensified Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense and Alufakwa campaign led by the province’s law enforcement officials, SurgeZirc SA has learned.

Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the arrests of law enforcement officers and even a senior public prosecutor for allegedly driving under the influence were deeply concerning.

“Police officers and a senior public prosecutor being arrested for alleged drunk driving is a serious matter,” Duma stated.

Officers Arrested with Alarming Alcohol Levels

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed that just two multidisciplinary operations on Saturday night resulted in dozens of arrests.

“Shockingly, a male police officer from Port Edward SAPS was arrested with an alcohol content six times over the legal limit,” Sibiya revealed. A female officer from Southport police station in Port Shepstone was also caught driving with an alcohol level four times above the legal limit.

In another incident, a drunk taxi driver was intercepted in Ladysmith while carrying 24 passengers in an overloaded minibus. “His alcohol content was five times over the legal limit,” Sibiya added.

MEC Duma Calls for Stronger Action Against Reckless Driving

Duma stressed that the department is determined to protect innocent families from the devastating consequences of reckless motorists.

“We are firm and determined to protect innocent families who may have their lives ravaged and destroyed by heartless and reckless motorists,” he said.

He further mandated that the department present a detailed plan to the justice, crime prevention and security cluster to ensure a united front in strengthening law enforcement, fighting crime, and safeguarding communities across KZN.
